A community arts worker, explorer on participatory approaches in image creation and a writer. Make a living from fragmented jobs in the cultural fields, while working as a full-time unpaid art director at v-artivist. I have been working on documentary creation, video-based arts education workshops, and grassroots movements. I believe that art belongs to everyone, and I’m now learning how to take art back to the lives of the people from the exhibition halls.
In the past few years, I have been working together with different citizens on a wide range of documentaries shot with humanism, including “Home Where the Yellow Banners Fly” (2005), which is about the struggle of the residents living on Lee Tung Street for civil urban planning; “An Oppressive and Yet Vibrant December"(2005), a film about the WTO in 2003; “Iron Born Roses”, which is a story of the striking bar-benders (2007); “Dog and Butterfly" (2007), which is about lives of the truck drivers; " The pier, the other shore" (2008), a documentary about the protests for the preservation of Star Ferry Pier and Queen’s Pier, “Walk on! Shun Ning Road!” (2010-15), which is about an anti-forced eviction movement of the poor; “exodus of nowhere" series, which is the story of the unrelated drifting individuals under global capitalism; “Wood” and “Fire” of “The Five Elements in Old Districts" series (2014), which are about the sensation from lives in old districts, and a film about the youth exploring the community, namely “翻土景深”.
Since the establishment of “v-artivist” in 2007, I have joined organizing video workshops with some grassroots organizations for the grassroots, which include the residents from urban renewal districts, workers and caregivers, grassroots women, Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, residents of the partitioned flats, ethnic minority women and so on.
In 2012, I, together with va members and some friends, started holding community screenings in Sham Shui Po from time to time, trying different creative and diverse ways to share art with the neighbours.
In addition to the community screenings, we have also co-organized various street community arts activities with organizations like Lee Tung Street H15 Concern Group, Sham Shui Po shunning-road-urban-renewal support group, screenings in To Kwa Wan and etc..
I write from time to time. Thinking that realism and imagination can co-exist, I try to develop a documentary writing approach. Collections include hard is the road (《行路難》, 2009), incense tree (沉香, 2011), (collected stories of the benighted) “短衣夜行紀” (2013).
