“tak cheong lane” is a narrow alley in Yaumatei, a nickname for a small shop space where we continuously get to know each other, gather, hangout, rest, etc. “We” are not a fixed collective. This “we” includes people who have been gathering together since the 2011-12 actions of Occupy Central, and others we have come to know during various social movements or situations, as well as other people who have dispersed on other paths.
Shop no. 3, 2, Tak Cheong Lane. Changes has been continuous, definitions impossible. It is an info shop, a vegetarian co-operative, a meeting point for various music and aesthetic interests, a place where people hangout, a space where happiness and sadness can be shared. Due to various reasons within the community, we decided to move out this past June, and we are looking forward to a new space next year.
Other than the physical space, there are various interests around which we cluster: reading, fitness, outings in nature… Some also gather to share living costs or support with divisions of labour in the process of creation or action. We each individually ally with other friends to form different groups with highly overlapping members, but differentiate in diverse ways, engaging by various artistic and non-artistic means.
After leaving Tak Cheong Lane, perhaps the signifier “tak cheong lane” has become empty of its significance. But it is our hope that the energy accumulated from our various crashes and encounters over the years will be able to come together again in a future space and continue provoking our imaginations.
